Gender Recognition Certificate
If you have not been issued a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), you must fill out a deed poll application to formally change your name. Having a deed poll beforehand can be helpful when applying for a GRC, as it confirms that you have fully adopted your new gender identity.
Changing your name on your passport requires submitting your deed poll as proof of your new identity. However, changing your gender on your passport requires additional steps. The HM Passport Office will ask for medical documents or records, such as those issued by a consultant/GP or a psychologist specializing in gender dysphoria, to prove that your gender transition is “likely to be permanent.”
If you have been issued a GRC, you can change both your name and gender by using this document. The Gender Recognition Panel, composed of medical and legal experts, reviews GRC applications, which can take up to 22 weeks.
Those who have obtained a new birth certificate after their transition do not need a deed poll to update their name and gender on official documents. Otherwise, filling out a deed poll application and paying the fee is necessary to begin the process of officially changing your name. After your application is processed, you may update your passport, license, and other records to reflect your new name and identity.
